Tulsi Meher Shrestha was born in middle-class Newar family ofBhelakshe tole, Lalitpur on 30th December 1896 A.D. He was the only child of his family. He was Inspired by reading the book of Maharshi Dayanand "The Light of Truth". Tulsi Mehar brought himself changes in his own life. He was a strong man. He thought that as long as these social evils and equality remained, a society cannot progress. He started awareness activities for social interaction.

In those early days when the country was in the grips of the Rana regime when people were not allowed to educate and to express their views freely. There was inequality in the society. Social evils like untouchability and exploitation prevailed in the Society. He began appearing in the public. His vision towards social development was to emphasize on women's empowerment. The Ranas were threatened by the growing popularity of Tulsi Meher. The Ranas exiled him from the Country at the age of 21.

He went to India, he met Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi was launching a movement to free India from the British rule. Tulsi Meher was greatly inspired by Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy of movement was based on peace, non-violence, service, self-reliance and discipline.His time with Mahatma Gandhi gave him an opportunity to gain experience and help the suffered people.

He returned to Nepal in 1923 A.D. He was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi wrote a letter to the Nepali prime minister to allow Tulsi Mehar to come back to Nepal and let him work for the sake of Nepalese people. The Rana Prime Minister gave him consent and Tulsi Mehar started a small project of spinning and weaving. The first place from where Tulsi Mehar commenced his journey to service to the society was from Shankhamul Ghat (at the bank of Bagmati River) of Lalitpur District. The Rana Prime minister Chanda Shumsher again became suspicious about his activities. In order to please the Prime Minister and continue the movement. He established an Organization called "Shree Chandra Kamdhenu Chakra Pracharak Mahaguthi". This organization emphasized on discarding the use of foreign clothes. It gave more importance to home-made cotton clothes. The Chakra movement was not liked by Bhim Shumsher, the Rana Prime Minister. He banned the Chakra movement . He arrestedTulsi Meher and put him in the Prison. He was remained in the jail and released in 2007 B.S. Tulsi Meher became free to continue his work of Social reform after the advent of democracy. He also established a social organization called "Gandhi Smarak Nidhi' in 2008 B.S. The main objectives of the organization were listed below:

  • Provide food, Shelter, and clothing to the poor, orphans and the helpless.
  • Elimination of illiteracy and bring about harmonious development in the country.

Tulsi Meher was recognized as the Social worker. Women were exploited in the society. He conducted education, short and long term training programs. Tulsi Mehar died on 27th September 1978 soon after he received " Nehru Award". He donated the whole amount of money for women's training center. Many of present Nepalese organizations have followed the same principle. There are various Organizations in the name of him. Some of them are:
