Computer virus is a term given to man-made computer software or system to destroy computer programs or computer. Virus destroys data, useful application, programs and even the operating system. Computer virus hide themselves in other host files. They are not visible to us. The viruses can corrupt, delete files and programs.

Purposes of Creating Computer Viruses

The first computer virus "C-Brain" was developed in 1987 to stop illegal reproduction of software developed from Alvi's Brain Computer shop.

But nowadays, viruses are developed for the following purposes:

  • To stop the software piracy.
  • To remind the incidents that happened at different time.
  • To destroy and steal data, information and files.
  • To earn money

Effects of Computer Viruses

Computer Viruses affect the computer in many ways. It can destroy data, files or programs and cause the system malfunction. The destructive effects of viruses are different according to their types.

Some of the effects of virus are as follows:

  • The speed of computer is reduced.
  • The instruction of program is reduced.
  • Data may be lost in the database.
  • Virus may transfer from one file to another.
  • It corrupts the system data.

Spreading of Computer Viruses

When a host file or program is used, the virus become active and tries to infect other files.

Computer viruses can spread from one computer to another computer by the following ways:

  • By sharing of infected storage device.
  • By using pirated software.
  • By downloading files from unreliable web sites.
  • By exchanging data, information or files on the network.
