Upon completion of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Explain the history of earth with reference to fossil.
  • Explain evolution of life with reference to fossil.

Notes

History of Earth

This note provide the information about estimated age of earth, area of the surface, lithosphere, hydrosphere, mass, relative density and many more history of Earth.

Evolution of Life

Paleontological evidenceshows that evolution has occurred. By the study of fossils, it is known that 570 million years ago, there was not suitable condition for living organisms on the land to evolve but some single-celled organisms were originated in oceans. This note briefly describe about evolution of life in different eras.

Geological Time Scale

The age of the earth has been estimated about 4.6 billion years. A time scale that covers the earth’s history from its origin to the present is called geological time scale. The chronology is divided into hierarchy of time intervals: Eons, Eras, Periods and Epochs. This note is description on how geological time period of earth is differentiated.

Formation of Earth

The origin of the earth is directly related to the origin of the solar system as the earth is a member of the solar system. This note has different hypothesis regarding origin of the earth.
