Making a world map means representing the curved surface of a whole sphere on a flat piece of paper. There are different ways to do it. The oldest way is to imagine a light at the center of the glass globe, with the continents all opaque. The shadow of the continents on a flat screen becomes the map. When this is done, shapes and areas are altered. In particular the land near the North and South poles is stretched and appears much bigger than it is. The earth which has spherical surface can be represented without any distortion only on the globe.
A map is a representative of the earth's surface or a part of it is drawn in a flat piece of paper. Maps may be small scale or large scale. There are different types of map such as wall maps and atlas maps giving general structure of a large area of continents or countries and topographic and thematic maps giving general structure of a larger area.
A sketch map is drawn without measuring, but it shows relative positions. A sketch map does not consider scale. It only takes care about direction and relative locations.
