Human Dependency on the Environment

All the living creatures including human beings depend on the environment. Human beings, animals, air, water, soil, vegetation, minerals etc found on the earth are the chief resources of the environment. Living things cannot survive in the polluted environment because it affects the life adversely. Every creature needs a particular type of environment for its survival. All living creature need a suitable environment to survive properly. There are different resources found in the environment such as air, water, soil, vegetation and minerals.

Air

Air is the most essential factor for life. Man cannot survive without air. Fresh air keeps us healthy. People carry out different activities in different fields such as industries, business, large construction works, transport, cultivation and so on. Poisonous gases from the environment pollutes the air. Similarly, we throw away garbage or waste materials of home, industry and hotels in the surrounding areas. Such activities pollutes the air.

Water

Water is an important environmental component. Most of the big cities in the world are situated on the banks of big rivers. Water is most essential component of human body. Nearly 60 percent of the human body is made up of water. When there is a dearth of water in our body, it results in dehydration. Water is used daily in drinking, washing, farming, irrigation and other activities. When industrial chemicals, sewage, drain water and other waste matters mix with water sources, water gets contaminated. Clean water keeps people healthy whereas contaminated water causes several disease in them.

Soil

All the creatures depend on the earth. Soil or land is the sources of basic needs such as food, shelter and cloth. Soil has a natural capacity to produce food. Human settlement is only possible in the soil. Human activities use factories, roads, agriculture, etc. for which soil or land is necessary. Soil degradation disturbs the normal life of all living creatures and the whole ecosystem gets imbalanced. So, soil must be conserved and used properly.

Vegetation

Vegetation means plants in general or plants which are found in the surrounding. All the surrounding things comes under the environment. All the plants are the components of the environment. Animals including human beings get their food from plants. We use forest products to fulfill most of our needs. The animals that completely depend on the plants for their food are called herbivorous. The animals like cow, goat, deer and horse are the examples of herbivorous animal. The animals which depend on the flesh of other animals are called carnivorous animal. Animals like tiger, lion and jackal are the examples of carnivorous animal. Animals like man which depend on both plants and animals are called omnivorous.

  • There can be more than one community in a society. Community smaller than society.
  • It is a network of social relationships which cannot see or touched.
  • common interests and common objectives are not necessary for society.
Questions and Answers

The two type of resources found in the environment are:

Air

Air is the most essential factor for life. Man cannot survive without air. Fresh air keeps us healthy. Poisonous gases from the environment pollutes the air. Similarly, we throw away garbage or waste materials of home, industry and hotels in the surrounding areas. Such activities pollutes the air.

Vegetation means plants in general or plants which are found in the surrounding.

An ecosystem is a community of living organisms (plants, animals and microbes) in conjunction with the non-livingcomponent of their environment (things like air, water and mineral soil), interacting as a system.

The effect of air, water and soil pollution on living organism are listed below:

  1. Air pollution increases global warming which causes melting of snow, flood, landslide, soil erosion etc.
  2. Polluted water causes various infectious diseases like typhoid, cholera, dysenteryetc.
  3. Sound pollution disturbs the hearing capacity and affects the brain.

Rapid population growth should be controlled first to maintain balance between population and environment. And the over exploitationof resource should be controlled so that there would not be any pollution and we can keep on maintaining balance between population and environment.
