Over population has been a burning problem of the present world. The pressure of over population has caused environmental degradation. For the conservation of the environment and to control the population growth various international agencies are actively involved. They have been trying hard to solve the problems resulted from over population and policies to run programmes to control population and maintain balance in the environment. They have launced many programmes in villages and towns . In our country, agencies likeUnited Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) , United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), The World Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), United Nations Environment Programmes (UNEP), International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IOCN) and the world wide Fund for Nature (WWF) have been working.
The UNFPA was established in 1969 AD. At first it was called United Nations Fund for population Activities or UNFPA. Though it was changed as United Nations Population Fund in 1989 AD. It is still written as UNFPA. This agency has been conducting many programmes since its establishment. It has its own working fund, which is an auxiliary part of the United Nations General Council.
The UNEFPA is the largest multinational agency which supports population related activities. It creates awareness of people in the developed and developing countries. It provides countries with financial and technical supports so that they can cope with the problems resulting from over population and environmental degradation.
Various programmes like integrated national child welfare service, demographic statistics management, population education, vital registration and extension of information, study and research work etc was conducted by UNEFPA. This agency has provided fund for following projects:
UNICEF was established in 1946 AD. At the beginning, it had the aim to help the war victim children of Europe and China. Later it changed its policy and the general assembly of the United Nations adopted a policy to help the children of the developing countries. UNICEFhas helped the community forests of rural area and the multipurpose afforestation programmes to increase people's participation in the promotion and conservation of forests. UNICEF has interest in programmes that develop the settlement of people coming from village to towns, living in slums and poor settlements and aims to raise their economic status. Another main function of UNICEF is to provide education, training and empowers mothers.
UNICEF conducted a special environmental project in 1990 AD. Some other programmes like agricultural forest, environmental sanitation, use of proper modern technology etc were too included in this programme. Similarly, it also conducts training programmes for regional workers and women.
