MS-DOS (Microsoft Disk Operating System)

MS-DOS stands for Microsoft Disk Operating System. It has three essential files and many command files. These essential files are: IO. SYS (Input Output System), MS-DOS, SYS (Microsoft Disk Operating System), and COMMAND.COM. These files are called system files of MS-DOS.

Advantages/ Features of MS-DOS

  • It supports various computer languages.
  • It is small sized operating system.
  • It initiates the concept of operating system during the time of booting.

Disadvantages of MS-DOS

  • It has command line user interface so it is totally command based operating system.
  • It has limited features to work with modern computer system.
  • It is not so user friendly like windows system and cannot support advance computer peripheral devices like mouse.
  • It is single user, single tasking operating system.

UNIX Operating System

UNIX is a family of multitasking, multiuser computer operating systems that was developed in the 1970s at the Bell Labs research center by Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie, and others. It is written entirely in the C programming language. Different clones of UNIX have risen over the years such as Linux and BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution). Most Unix-like systems are "free" in the sense that everyone who received a copy would be free to use, study, modify, and redistribute it.

MS-Windows

MS-Windows was one of the first graphical Operating Systems introduced by Microsoft in Nov 20, 1985. It was a graphical Operating Shell over the MS-DOS. Because of its ease of use, it made the Personal computers very popular. Currently, it shares more than 60% of market ans is the leading operating system in the worlds.
