Subject: Computer Basics
DBMS stands for Database Management System. It is a information system or software, which
Database management systems are software packages that simplify the creation, user and maintenance of databases. Several types of databases are used by organizations including operational, distributed, external, data warehouses and data marts. Some example of DBMS are Finacle (Core Banking Software), Pumori (banking Software), MS Access (Simple DBMS), MySql, Oracle etc.
Today DBMS is becoming one of the most vital parts of any organization as today's business enterprises cannot survive or succeed without quality data about their internal operations and external environment.

1. It is a collection of data or related information. | 1. It is a software package to manage database |
2. It consists of data. | 2. It manages data in the database. |
3. It is a part of DBMS | 3. It is a software system which contains database. |
Example: phone diary, data of SLC exam, etc. | Example: FoxPro, Access, etc. |
dBase (also stylized dBASE) was one of the first and in its day the most successful database management systems for microcomputers. The dBase system includes the core database engine, a query system, a forms engine, and a programming language that ties all of these components together. dBase's underlying file format, the .dbf file, is widely used in applications needing a simple format to store structured data.
dBASE was originally published by Ashton-Tate for microcomputer operating system CP/M in 1980, and later ported to Apple II and IBM PC computers running DOS. On the PC platform, in particular, dBase became one of the best-selling software titles for a number of years. A major upgrade was released as dBase III, and ported to a wider variety of platforms, adding UNIX, and VMS.
HINARI Access to Research in Health Programme was set up by the World Health Organization and major publishers to enable developing countries to access collections of biomedical and health literature. There are up to 13,000 e-journals and up to 29,000 online books available to health institutions in more than 100 countries. HINARI is part of Research4Life, the collective name for four programs - HINARI (focusing on health), AGORA (focusing on agriculture), OARE (focusing on environment), and ARDI (focusing on applied science and technology). Together, Research4Life provides developing countries with free or low cost access to academic and professional peer-reviewed content online.
SN | Database | DBMS |
1 | Database is a collection of interrelated data | Database management system is a software which can be used to manage the data by storing it on to the data base and by retrieving it from the data base. |
2 | The database holds the records, fields, cells with data. | The DBMS is the "tools" used to manipulate the data in the database. |
3 | The examples of database are dictionary, encyclopedia etc. | The example of DBMS are MS Access, DBASE etc. |
Any four advantages of DBMS are as follows:
Database is a collection of data organized to service many applications at the same time by storing and managing data so they appear to be at one location.
