Overview

The solution that has relatively a less amount of solute for a given amount of solvent is called dilute solution. The solution that has relatively a large amount of solute for a given amount of solvent is called concentrated solution. The solution, which can dissolve excess solute at the given temperature, is called unsaturated solution at that temperature. This note gives us the information about different types of solution.

Dilute and concentrated solution

The solution that has relatively a less amount of solute for a given amount of solvent is called dilute solution. The solution that has relatively a large amount of solute for a given amount of solvent is called concentrated solution.

Difference between dilute and concentrated solution

Dilute solution Concentrated solution
It contains relatively a less amount of solute for a given amount of solvent. It contains relatively a large amount of solute for a given amount of solvent.
Its density is low. Its density is more.
It has less saturation. It has more saturation.

Saturated, unsaturated and supersaturated solution

The solution, which can dissolve excess solute at the given temperature, is called unsaturated solution at that temperature. It has less density. Precipitation does not appear on cooling.

The solution, which cannot dissolve excess of the solute at a particular temperature, is called a saturated solution at that temperature. On heating, it becomes unsaturated. Precipitation of solute appears on cooling. It has more density.

The saturated solution at a higher temperature that holds excess solute than the required amount for a saturated solution at that temperature is called supersaturated solution.

Difference between saturated and unsaturated solution

Unsaturated solution Saturated solution Supersaturated solution
It can dissolve excess solute at the given temperature. It cannot dissolve excess of the solute at a particular temperature. A supersaturated solution is a solution that contains more solute than would dissolve in a saturated solution at a given temperature.
On heating, it remains unsaturated. On heating, it becomes unsaturated. On heating, it may become saturated
Precipitation does not appear on cooling. Precipitation appears on cooling. Precipitation occurs when the crystal of a supersaturated solution is dropped.
It has less density It has less density than the supersaturated solution but more than the unsaturated solution. It has more density.

Importance of solution

  • Oxygen is found dissolved in water and in air that is used by living organisms for respiration.
  • Plants take minerals and soil from the soil in the form of a solution.
  • Most of the reactions are taking place easily in the form of a solution.
  • Most of the medicines and plants are found in the form of solution,
  • Solution is essential in many industries.
Things to remember

Questions and Answers
The substance which gets dissolved and is present in smaller proportion is called the solute. In sugar solution, sugar is solute.
The substance which dissolves the solute and is present in larger proportion is called the solvent. In salt solution, water is solvent.
Solution is defined as a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances. For example sugar solution, salt solution etc.
  1. Unsaturated solution: a solution which can dissolve more solute at a particular temperature is known as unsaturated solution at that temperature.
  2. Saturated solution: A solution which cannot dissolve any more solute at a particular temperature is known as saturated solution at that temperature.
  3. Supersaturated solution: When more quantity of solute is dissolved by raising the temperature of a saturated solution, it is called a supersaturated solution.
  1. Dilute solution: A solution in which the amount of solution is small compared to that of the solvent is known as a dilute solution.
  2. Concentrated solution: A solution in which the amount of the solute is large compared to that of the solvent is known as concentrated solution.
The differences between saturated solution and unsaturated solution are as follows:
Saturated solution Unsaturated solution
A solution in which more solute cannot dissolve at a particular temperature as saturated solution. A solution in which more solute can dissolve at a particular temperature is known as unsaturated solution.
It may be unsaturated on heating. It may be more unsaturated on heating.
The difference between dilute and concentrated solution are as follows:
Dilute solution Concentrated solution
A solution in which more solute cannot dissolve at a particular temperature as saturated solution A solution in which more solute can dissolve at a particular temperature is known as unsaturated solution.
It may be unsaturated on heating. It may be more unsaturated on heating.
Importances of a solution are given below.
  1. Plants take mineral salts in the form of solution from the soil.
  2. The food that we take absorbed in the form of solution.
  3. Aquatic animals take oxygen dissolved in water.
  4. We take medicines in the form of solution.
When a saturated solution at a high temperature is cooled, inter molecular space between the molecules of the solution decreases. As a result, no more solute can remain in a solution separating out as a solid crystal.
The size of CuSO4 crystal remains same on saturated solution and the size of the CuSO4 crystal increases in supersaturated solution.
