A social phenomenon which establishes a kind of relation between male and female according to the social norms and values is known as marriage. This note provide us detailed information about marriage and its types.

A social phenomenon which establishes a kind of relation between male and female according to the social norms and values is known as marriage.It is a legal union of male and female as husband and wife.

Marriage has been considered as moral base of male and female relationship from the ancient time and has occupied important status in every society.

Types of Marriage

On the Basis of Number of Spouses

  • Monogamy: It is the process of being married only with one woman or man. It is the most practiced types of marriage in our society.
  • Polygamy: Polygamy is a type of marriage in which one man is married to two or more than two women in the same time. This is further divided into two types, sororal and non- sororal. In the sororal type of polygamy, all the wives are from the same parent whereas, in non- sororal type of polygamy, all wives belong to the different parent or are from different parents or family.
  • Polyandry: In this type, the woman is married to two or more than two men. This type of marriage is more common in Tibet, Africa, India and Mountain region of Nepal.

In polygamy types of marriage, usually, the husband is head of the family.

In polyandry type of marriage, usually, the wife is the head of a family.

They are further divided into two types, sororate, and non- sororate.

Here, the property is divided.

Here, the property is not divided.

It is found in modern society.

On the Bais of Marriage Arrangement

  • Arrange Marriage: It is a type of marriage on which guardians of both male and female agreed to marry them according to social, religious and cultural norms.
  • Love Marriage: It is a type of marriage in which boy and a girl marry with their mutual understanding and agreement when they reach at the age of marriage.
  • Court Marriage: It is a type of marriage on which boy and girl go to the court and get married according to the law.

Arrange Marriage

 Love Marriage
The marriage which is arrange by parents or by the guardians is called arrange marriage. The marriage which is done without asking to family members or parents is called love marriage.
In this type of marriage parents are indirect or direct involved. But in love marriage there is no involvement of parents.
The old parents they like arrange marriage . The young people they give preference to love marriage.
According to Nepal, the legal age for both male and female is 18 years. In case of love marriage, the minimum age for both male and female is 20 years.
In this marriage may be male and female may not know each other. In this typeof marriage the boy and girl fell in love before marriage.
We can find this types of marriage in the traditional rural society. We can see this types of marriage in the morden socity .
On the Basis of Social System
There are different castes and cultural in our country and they practice marriage according to their culture. Following types of marriage are some of the examples of it:
  • Betel-Nut Marriage: In this type of marriage, a betel nut is given to girl's guardians from boy's side.
  • Arranged Marriage: In this type of marriage, the hand of girl and boy is asked for marriage in agreement of guardians.
  • Elopement: In this type of marriage, boy and girl elope and get married.
  • Marry with sister-in-law: In this type of marriage, a man marries and accepts his elder's brother's wife.
  • Marry with widow: In this type of marriage, a widow willingly marries with a person of her choice.
  • Gandharva Marriage: In this type of marriage, one marries by showing his/her talent by dancing in festivals.
  • Jari Marriage: In this type of marriage, a man who takes away another man's wife has to pay money to another man as compensation.
  • Bel Bibaha: In this marriage, young Newari girls they married with the fruit called 'bel' And worshipped bel as their husband.

Age of Marriage

According to recent law of Nepal, male should be of 20 years and female should be of 18 years and requires their parents permission to get married.

Advantages of marriage at proper age

Following are the advantages of marriage at proper age:

  • Healthy child is born form physically, mentally, morally matured mother.
  • Both male and female get opportunity to be educated.
  • Both male and female get opportunity ti learn income generating skills and cab be employed easily.
  • There is development of knowledge and understanding in parents.
  • Parents get more opportunities to work in social and economical field.
  • The age of studying, learning and playing cab be fully utilized.
  • The size of family become small.

Disadvantage of early marriage

The disadvantage of early marriage for both male and female are as follows:

  • There is less opportunity for parents to get education.
  • Female reproductive organs have not been matured.
  • Parents are bounded in family relations without utilizing their childhood rights.
  • Females do not get opportunities to learn income generating skills.
  • There is lack of appropriate knowledge about reproductive process, family planning etc.
  • There is more possibility of unstable family relation due to early marriage.

The Nepali meaning of levirate marriage is Bhauju Behorne bibaha. From the name itself, it is clear that the marriage is between Bhauju (sister in law) and Dewar (brother in law). This marriage is performed when elder brother dies and widow sister is law is married with the younger brother. This type of marriage is diminishing day by day. This is the unique marriage in Nepal society.

According to the data, the average life expectancy of Nepalese people on 1961 was 31 years. And the average life expectancy in the year 2001 is 60.8 years, which shows the tremendous growth over the past forty years. Average expectancy is directly related to the living standard of people. Due to the spread of education, availability of health services and facilities and rising standard of living, the average expectancy has increased in Nepal. People do not use junk food. They are attracted towards nutritious food. They got good education relating to their health. Due to these above mentioned reasons life expectancy is increasing in Nepal.
