The scope of environment education is also called the content or subject matter of environment education.There are different aspects and components in the environment. Among them, the biological, physical, social and cultural aspects are important.



The scope of environmental education can be divided into biological, physical and sociological aspects.They are described below:

  1. Biological aspect: Biological aspects is one of the most important aspects of environmental education. Human being, animals, birds, insects, microorganism, plants are some of the examples of biological aspects.
  2. Physical aspect: It can be further divided into natural aspects and human- made aspects. Air, water, land, climate etc are included in natural physical aspects. Likewise, Human made physical aspects cover all human made things such as roads, buildings, bridges, houses etc.
  3. Socio- cultural aspect: Socio- cultural aspects are man made social practices, rules and laws, and other religious places etc. Human beings have created them with their effort.


Thus, the environmental education is related with science, economics, geography, technology, population and health education, etc. It helps to develop integrated knowledge and feeling of co- operation in the students. As a result environment education becomes practical and contextual. Environment education can be implemented through formal and non-formal educational means. The basic concepts of ecology, natural resources, population environmental health etc are some of the subject matters in this subject. The environment education helps students to develop integrated knowledge and attitude which will be more effective to the society.

Environment and health is directly inter-related with each other. Environment is the surrounding where we live. Environment comprises of land, soil, natural resources, human beings and artificial things invented by human beings. So, environment terms are plural and cover an infinitive numbers. A person is healthy only when he gets fresh food, water and air to breathe. He also utilizes environment for shelter, utilizes land to grow food to eat. This is only possible if environment is extricated from air pollution and soil pollution.
Therefore, healthy environment helps to make healthier life.

Biological, cultural and physical aspects are the area of environment education. They are explained as follows:
  • Biological aspects:
    Biological aspect is one of the important aspects of environment men, animals, birds, insects, microbes, vegetation etc., come under it.
  • Physical aspects:
    Physical aspects can be classified as natural and manmade aspects. Natural existence like air, water, land, climate, geographic structure etc. denote nature environment, whereas road, house, bridge, home, machine etc are manmade aspects.
  • Socio-cultural aspects:
     Manmade social usage, rule customs, temples, religious places, pati-pauwa etc. are socio-cultural aspects. Man has created them with using his wisdom and toil.

As population is growing day by day and the limited resources are decreasing every second. In addition, environment education as defined by UNESCO, "It is a way of implementing the goals of the environmental protection," The natural environment (system) of relationship between humans, living world and environment should not be disturbed while using the resources. Knowledge, attitudes and skills in this aspect are developed among users by environment education. It gives clear idea about the conservation of management of resources in a suitable way. Wise use of natural resources means using resources in effective and efficient way so they are utilized properly and also conserved for the future. In other words, environment education teaches us about the basic principles of conservation. Thus, environment education teaches us wise-uses of natural resources.

Environment is the surroundings in which we live. Environment comprises various factors like air, water, land, soil, bio diversity, microorganisms, other natural resources and some other abstract components created by human beings. Cultural practices, norms, values, feasts and festivals etc. are some man made abstract components of the environment. All living creatures must develop their capacity to adjust in the environment for healthy survival. The basic components needed for survival are air, water, food, shelter etc. are directly obtained from environment. People with environment each and every moment and the interaction determines their health status. So, if the environment is healthy we obtain healthy foods, water, air which upshot to healthy life.

The three aspects of environmental education are physical aspects, biological aspects and socio- culture aspects.
The types of physical aspects are natural aspects and man- made aspects.
The example of natural aspects is soil and man- made aspect is road.
Any two examples of biological aspects are animals and birds.
The socio- cultural norms,values, traditions, customs as well as temples, mosques, gumbas, chaityasand churches that created by the human toll and innovations are called socio- cultural aspects.
