Women are regarded as the most beautiful and complete creation of god. She is also said to be the symbol of love, independence, caring, gentleness and intensity. A man does not go through the difficult and painful path as a woman does throughout their life. Men are emotionally no so stronger than women. However, women have not been treated nicely by men all throughout time. Women are deprived of their rights and their opportunities.

The reasons for the backwardness of women are as follows: -

  1. Male dominant society
  2. Traditional thinking and discrimination between male and female
  3. Concept that women are not as stronger than men
  4. Lack of proper reproductive health services
  5. Ineffective women empowerment programmes

Those rights that promote a position of legal and social equality for women with men are called women rights. Every woman should have the ability to express their freedoms and rights, deserve equal treatment within their society and region, and every country needs to reinforce the rules for women. There is no equal respect and dignity for women as for men. Gender equality is still out of reach for many women worldwide.

One of the most important international women’s rights around the world is the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women that provides the basis for realizing equality between women and men through ensuring women's equal access to, and equal opportunities in, political and public life. The Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women spells out the wide forms of violence against women. Its wording includes the phrase, “Recognizing that violence against women is a manifestation of historically unequal power relations between men and women, which have led to domination over and discrimination against women by men.”

The constitution of Nepal, 2063 has declared equal rights for women on their parental property. The government would establish new rules for the education, health and employment of women. It would also punish those who violate women's right. The government have provided 33% inclusion of women in government sectors. Nepal has also adopted the principle in 1979 to provide all the rights to women reducing the discrimination against women. 8th March is celebrated as Women's Day every year.

Those rights that promote a position of legal and social equality for women with men are called women rights.

Women's Day is celebrated on 8th March every year.

Women empowerment is a strategic concept that assumes the women are more underdeveloped and adopts various programmes for mobilization and participation of women in every aspect of society so that they are uplifted to the level of men.
To empower women in Nepal the following ways may be more effective:

  • Women are basically suppressed in the family by their relatives. So, the discrimination should be eradicated from the family and opportunities should be made equally available to women, too.
  • The government should introduce such programmes that encourage women to participate in different activities for their self- dependency and empowerment.
  • Reservation for women from local to central level should be erased so that their representation makes policies and programmes for their own betterment.

This is how women can come up with progress and prosperity. Besides, men have to play a supportive role for the women.

Participation of women in development activities is vital. This statement can be justified on the following points:

  • Development activities are carried out by mobilizing the available means and resources. To mobilize the locally available means and resources. Women play very important roles, they are involved in various committees and decision-making process, in the absence of their participation these activities are not possible.
  • Women population covers more than half number. Without ensuring the participation of half population, it is not possible to carry out development activities. Even if they are launched or implemented, they do not become sustainable. It is very compulsory to enhance women participation in development.
  • These are various sectors of development in which women can perform better than men. These sectors are well managed and run by women. So, women participation in these activities can be much beneficial.
  • The existing rules and regulations play very important roles in ensuring women participation in development, if women are involved in law making and decision making process, they formulate the law and make the right decision, and this helps to develop the nation.

The four activities performed by government and non-governmental organization to get the women involvement in development activities are:

  • Encouragement and computation to be involved in the decision-making process at different levels from grass root level to central level.
  • Conducting different awareness programmes and training to uplift the women conditions. So they can generate their own income sources, which help them to involve in development activities.
  • Thirty-three percent of the seat is guaranteed to women at all levels, structures and function of the state including the parliament.
  • Equal rights to parental and reservation in civil services.

The following aspects should be considered to increase women participation in developmental activities:

  • Women's involvement in any decision-making, plan formulation, etc. must be made obligatory.
  • Various technical training, vocational subjects and special classes for women should be run by government or NGOs.
  • Awareness campaigns through media, street drama, journal, radio, etc. should be launched frequently.
  • Women's involvement should be made on the basis of their creativity qualification, age, etc. not merely on the basis of gender or sex.

The four roles to be played by every individual, family, society and government in uplifting the living standard of Nepalese women are as follows: -

  • Every individual can help women in each area of development by inspiring them to make progress and do something of their own.
  • In each family, girl and women can be emphasized in making decision-making, going to school and pursuing other activities.
  • Society can give privileges to women while making decisions and carrying on any activities.
  • Government can make affirmative discrimination by declaring 50% reservation in every sector and aspect of the affair since women occupy more than half of the population of the country.

The government along with other non-government organizations is carrying out various activities for encouraging women's participation in mainstream development activities so that to uplift their condition like that of males.
Some of the activities done by them are as follows:

  • The government has allocated 33% reservation seats for women in government services and is encouraging private sector too for the same.
  • The governmental has provision for the involvement of women in any developmental activity, it's plan formulation and implementation.
  • Various NGOs are launching various campaigns like street drama, radio programme, etc. for awarding women to take active participation in developmental work.
  • Women have been provided with various technical training, vocational subjects and other recreational activities to motivate them for equal participation.

Following aspects should be emphasized to improve the participation of women in the development work of Nepal:

  • Equal treatment but at the same time female should be given emphasis in the eyes of the law.
  • Male and female should be equally educated.
  • Affirmative discrimination should be made on the behalf of female to improve their condition.
  • Female should be provided with skilled oriented training.
  • A provision of reservation should be made to ensure the position of women in various sectors.

The position and opportunities of girls can be changed by:

  • Providing education.
  • Emphasizing women in each and every field.
  • Emphasizing women in creative work rather than household works.
  • Introducing special programmes for girls to bring them in the mainstream of development.

The possible reasons for the least participation of women in development of the country are as follows:

  • Lack of the education and awareness.
  • Women are bound by the traditional concepts of conservative society.
  • Our society, being male-dominated, has a concentration of women's role in domestic work only.
  • Lack of vocational and technical training.
  • Lack of equal participation and policy of men to proceed forward alone.
  • Lack of encouragement and opportunity.

Obviously, the present world shouldn't make any gender discrimination that hinders the human, as well as the country's development. Women have surpassed very odd and complex situations, but there have slowly and gradually been changes on the favour of women and their development. For the women's infrastructural development, we can do following things:

  • First of all, the parents should not discriminate among their children, provide education to both son and daughter equally, love and opportunity for their daughter.
  • The theory of social justice should be more liberal, favourable and women friendly so that they wouldn't be socially victimized from their parents, husband or other males.
  • A good emphasis should be provided to generate income for those who are uneducated, victimized by family violence, girls trafficking etc.
  • The norms of women rights of UN should be implemented and protected of courts, too.
