Generally, a map is a combination of different colours, indices, and symbols. It is easily available, portable and easy to handle. It shows the relative size of the place. Proper use of colours and the appropriate use of generally accepted symbols are very important parts of a map.

Conventional Symbols
These are the representation of physical setting of a particular place. Particular features of a place are presented by specific symbols. Some of the typical colours on a map and their meanings are as follows:
