Overview

This note includes information about land resources with its importance and management. Forests are the vast natural resources for man for fuel, timber, paper, fodder, water yield and animal products. Ecological studies have shown that forests help o maintain the level of rainfall. Forest helps in balancing the gaseous (C02 and O2) cycles of atmosphere and tend to increase water holding capacity of soil.

Nepal covers a total land area of 147,181 sq.k. about 0.1% of the total land on earth with altitudinal variation ranging from 71m in the east terai to 8848 m high mountain from sea level. The proper use and maintenance of land resources in order to fulfill the needs of present and future generations is known as land management. The land is used for various purposes like for agriculture, shelter and for many more things. But due to the excessive use of pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and massive industrialization and urbanization it has caused a great problem in land disturbing its ecosystem.

To manage the land resources following things should be done.

  • Excessive use of pesticides, chemical fertilizers, should be minimized.
  • Unplanned industrialization and urbanization should be stopped.
  • Afforestation programs should be done in a barren land to prevent soil erosion and landslide.
  • Agriculture land should be used only for agricultural purposes. It should be not used for non-agricultural purposes.
