Music is the word derived from the French word “musique”. It also relates to word from Latin word “musica”, which in turn is derived from poetry too. Music is defined as vocal or instrumental sound (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion. Although the word music has French origins, music itself is associated with all sort of cultures and has prevailed in all different civilizations. From the Vedic culture to Mayan culture, music has had its roots. One can easily say that people learnt how to play music from nature itself. From the drop of rain hitting a roof, to the sound of a fast flowing river, anything can be called a type of music. So it is hard to trace who and how actually music started.

Music takes different forms across many cultures. A ‘congo’ in Africa, a ‘sitar” in India, a ‘drum’ in Argentina, all verify that music has different forms. So musical instruments are created in different shapes to many sounds. Many types of musical instruments are played across the world in many ways. Music is used from entertainment to healing purposes. One cannot imagine a life without music. Love for music is not a tendency of human-beings only. It is a common characteristic of nearly all living creatures. The moment musical notes softly enter our ears, they arouse the dormant love for it.

Music is a form of entertainment that serves as a profession too. Guitarists, Lyricists, Pianists, Drummers all have some kind of a music career. Academic learning and courses have also been made available for a musical career. Music serves as a source of entertainment. Music represents love, sorrow and all kind of emotions. So the need for music and the changes for it also has made it possible to establish a career in music. Not only that, music can also help in relaxing and meditation. Music has miraculous powers for treating certain mental ailments such as anxiety, abnormal excitement or depression. It is also helpful for the treatment of patients suffering from insomnia. It has excellent exhilarating power.

Music also serves as universal language. The barriers of language and religion cannot restrict music to flourish in a foreign country. Music has the power to dissolve the physical boundaries of the nations. It removes the barriers of age and language and speaks to us all. Not only that, music also derives its roots and is related to magic. Music has magical power. This is testified by the fact that Orpheus, a legendary Greek musician, could make stones dance to his music. The stories of Tansen and Baiju Bawra are well-known to us. They could light lamps, melt stones, blossom flowers in autumn, cause rain just by the accurate use of the ‘accurate tune’.

One cannot imagine a world without music. Music is the sound that represents the emotions of life. Music washes away from the soul, the dust of everyday life and inspires one to live a lofty life. There is absolute tranquility and harmony, when the magical notes of music enters one’s heart. Such experiences are beyond words and can only be experienced. The notes of music take the listener to the region of the unknown where there is only emotional ecstasy and transport one to a world of melody and sympathy.
