Every family needs certain things such as food, shelter, clothes, education and health services, etc. which are considered as the basic needs. All the family members are satisfied if all this things are provided to them. With the increase in the size of the family, the quantities of these things have to be increased. The head of the family has to think whether he/she is in the position to increase the quantities. Rapid population growth in the size of the family can cause economic burden and tension. The effect will be the degradation of life standard. It is even very difficult to fulfill the basic needs.
According to psychologist Abraham Maslow, the needs of family can be divided into following:
The most important need of everybody is food. In the absence of food survival of a human being is impossible. Shortage of food creates disputes, quarrels and problems of hunger in a family. There is a need of adequate availability of food in order to meet the demands of energy of the individual. We should not have wrong concept that expensive food is better. Even cheap food may sometimes be far better than expensive one in terms of nutrition.
We need house to live in and protect ourselves from sun, water, storm, wind, etc. The house gives us protection. We have fear living outside the house but we can live fearlessly in the house. Only the management of the house is not enough; cleanliness, neatness and proper management are also important.
Clothing is absolutely necessary for everybody. It is a symbol of making human being a social being. It is against civilization and mortality to remain naked. Besides this, clothing is important to protect our body from hot, cold, rain, dust, sun, etc. We may be the victims of different diseases if we don't wear clothes according to seasons and need. Clothing also determines the level of standard of the living of the people in the modern days.
Sex is also a prominent need of human life. One should indulge in sexual activities after maturity. The sex activity should be done between husband and wife. The sex involvement should not be made with other woman or man. Sex activity is necessary for the generation or heredity.
Good health has been considered as a human right but majority of people are deprived of this right. Unless and until people understand that good health is a basic need, they do not try to invest for attaining good health. It is wrong that only rich people can adopt healthy habits. Health education helps us to be healthy through the use of locally available resources and means.
Education is the other need of family. The education teaches us easy methods to live in various difficult situation of life. The people deprived of the light of education find it difficult to pass their life. So, education is basic need of life. The education establishes understanding in the family. It provides opportunity carry the family on the way to progress.
The elements related to basic needs of a family are listed below:
Basic needs are those needs which are directly associated with human survival. In the absence of basic need survival is not possible. Peace and security is an essential aspect of family welfare. The family is happy when there is peace and security. Inadequate means and source of livelihood and opportunities create unexpected problems and disturbs peace. Consequently an atmosphere of awe and insecurity is created. In this state, there is no happiness in the family. Family members will be deprived of the opportunity to utilize basic needs and services. Therefore, security is also considered as the basic needs in the present context.
Abraham Maslow has classified the needs of the family in two types i.e., basic needs and traditional needs. These needs are given below.
The fulfillment of basic needs is the base of fulfillment of additional needs. Always priority is first swift towards basic needs and then only additional needs are fulfilled. So, additional needs are secondary needs which are not needed for survival but needed for development and to ensure happiness in the future. Additional needs helps to create belongingness and to make status in society. When these needs are fulfilled an individual can lead himself to self-actualization and more superior in the society. The additional needs are; love and affection, belonging, esteem, freedom, self-actualization.
