General Metallurgy

Metal are the class of chemical elements with certain characteristic properties.Till today more than 110 elements are known.There is vast Different between metals and non-metals which are mentioned in above note. Elements which have intermediate properties between metals and non metals are called metalloids. Metalloids act as electron donor with non-metals and as electron acceptor with metals. An alloy is a homogenous mixture of two or more metals or metals with non-metals. As alloy possess metallic properties and it is prepared to get a product possessing desirable properties which the constituent elements do not posses.A homogeneous mixture of metals with mercury is called an amalgam.

The process of treatment depends on upon the nature of the ore, impurities, and the metal.It is reacts to Concentration or Benefaction of the Ore,includes the Crushing and grinding of the ore,Gravity separation or Levigation, Magnetic Separation, Froth Floatation Process, Liquation, Leaching And then the extraction of crude metals from the concentrated ores is involves in calcination and Roasting . The ore even after concentration and calcination, still contain certain impurities which have been removed. There are certain substance known as flux which when mixed with calcinated ore combine with impurities to form easily fusible materials known as slag. Finally the obtained metal may contain impurities which are separately separated by Oxidative Refining , Distillation , Liquation or Electrolytic Refining
