Some Useful Chemicals

Upon completion of this lesson, student must be able to:

  • List the resources of water.
  • Define water cycle and write short note on it.
  • Define hard and soft water.
  • Tell the process of removal of hardness of water.
  • State how electrolysis is carried out.

Notes

Removal of Hardness of Water

Heating and treatment with lime water can remove temporary hardness of water. But permanent hardness is removed by treating water with washing soda or permutit method. This note provides us the information about Removal of Temporary Hardness.

Water

Water is the most common substance on the earth. Rain is produced by the condensation of the water vapour present in the air. This note gives us the information about water and properties of the water.

Hard and Soft Water

Soft water is the one which can produce lather with soap easily. Hard water cannot produce lather as easily as soft water. The hardness of water is due to the presence of soluble salts of magnesium and calcium. This note provides us the information about hard and soft water, its advantages and disadvantages.

Sodium Carbonate, Sodium Bicarbonate and Glycerol

Sodium Carbonate, Sodium Bicarbonate and Glycerol are some useful chemicals used in our daily life. Sodium carbonate is used to make soaps and detergents whereas sodium bicarbonate is used to make baking powder and glycerol is mostly used as sweetener. This note briefly describes the uses and features of Sodium Carbonate, Sodium Bicarbonate and Glycerol.
